The sun was setting and the short ding-a-ling of bells bid farewell to the last of the day's customers. Blair waves to them on their way out and sets their chairs upside down on the table where they sat. A spry, young-looking man wipes down the glass counter-top, occasionally looking up at her.
"Hey, uh... I'll finish up here if you want to hurry on home," he says.
Blair sets down a chair with a thump, "Thank you, Marcus."
Marcus nods, "I'll see you tomorrow."
Blair pats his shoulder as she walks past him to the back of the shop, she offers him an assuring smile, "I had better."
Marcus chuckles as Blair strides out the back of the bakery and into the alleyway behind. After shutting the door firmly behind her, Blair takes a long look down both sides of the alleyway before closing her eyes and taking a deep breath. In nearly an instant, Blair has disappeared and left in her place - a simple magpie. Without another moment wasted, the magpie sets off into the twilight sky, towards a downtown park, setting down on a tree across from a pair of star-crossed lovers.
As the sun finishes setting, the woman stands up, turns to her mate and drops to one knee. Producing a small box. Her soon-to-be fiancee covers her face, tears streaming down her eyes as she reaches down to take the ring out of the box, holding it up to the light of the street lamps.
"Yes!" she cries out.
The magpie cocks its head to the side and ruffles its feathers before swooping down and snatching the ring out of the woman's fingers and flying off into the night.
"No!" they both cry out.
But the magpie is long out of earshot, eventually landing on the balcony of a high rise apartment. Taking a moment to look around, the bird drops down from the ledge and disappears, leaving in it's place the mild-mannered baker, Blair Payne. She stands up and cracks her neck before picking the diamond ring off of the floor of the balcony. She slips it on her finger and holds it up to the moonlight, smiling to herself.
"Shiny."
